The Platinum Rule in the Workplace

Introduction: As an employee, many of us have attempted to follow the “Golden Rule” of “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. This rule is commendable but does not solely solve all issues or fit into today’s world. Some argue that there is a flaw in the “Golden Rule” because it is directed back on the person (self-referencing).

It presumes that everyone wants to be treated the same as you do, and this may not always be the case. It is even more complex for adults in the workplace who are dealing with real-world concerns and issues. We live in a diverse environment, and we bring complexities to the workplace. For the golden rule to work, we should consider how others feel and reflect on that. Most employees/people want to show genuine respect for others. To help with this, there is another rule that can be used. We can follow the “Platinum Rule”.

When building a Team or adjusting the membership, it takes time, clear goals, and expectations. When you attempt to work in an inclusive environment, it may lead to success if you follow one or both of these guiding rules.  There is no one right way to solve a problem or address an issue.

Conclusion:  This simply means treating others as they wish to be treated. If you know that someone is ‘by the numbers’, talk to them with that in mind. If you meet with someone social or process-based, work that way. We should strive to show mutual respect. For this to work, both parties should attempt to follow the “Platinum Rule” and the “Golden Rule”, it is a two-way street. In a multifaceted work environment, we should aim to complete work through the collective efforts of the team while shaping successful relationships
